Known as “The Block,” Asheville’s African American business district was one of the most prosperous African American commercial districts in the United States after the Civil War. These African American professionals, business owners, and community leaders were visionaries, always ahead of their time in working for cultural and social acceptance.
The Block was the central hub of commerce and community for African Americans in Asheville and Western North Carolina and served as host to black doctors, lawyers, dentists, pharmacists, architects, builders, restaurateurs, and literary scholars who hailed from some of our nation’s most prestigious Ivy League institutions.
