'Houses of Worship' and 'Many Faces of Asheville' Summer Trips Return |

There are few areas in the south as diverse as Atlanta, Georgia. This year, the Center for Diversity Education will again sponsor an annual trip to the city to expose North and South Carolina educators and citizens to various houses of worship and historic landmarks.
“Houses of Worship” includes visits to the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, a Jewish synagogue, a Muslim mosque, the BAPS Hindu Temple, Martin Luther King’s gravesite and museum, along with the DeKalb Farmer’s Market.
The
purpose of the trip is to provide teachers with new hands-on experience
and familiarity with different religious faiths that they may
experience in the classroom or that are a part of the North Carolina
Standard Course of Study. Although the trip was created initially for
the benefit of educators, it is now available to the general public.
Parents are invited to bring their middle and high school children so
that they too may gain an understanding of how faith intersects with
culture, art and politics.
The trip will be
on June 12, from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The cost is $100 per person
(with a 25% discount available for educators), which includes charter
bus transportation and dinner at an Indian restaurant. Most teachers
can receive 1 CEU (10 hrs) with the completion of a lesson plan
component.
More locally, on
August 8, the Center for Diversity Education will lead “The Many Faces
of Asheville” trip from 8:45am-3:30pm. Features of the trip include a
short downtown walking tour focusing on the historic immigrant
community and historic African American communities, a visit to
Southside Cemetery, and discussions at diverse houses of worship in
Asheville. Lunch at a Mexican restaurant will be provided along with a
speaker about our local Latino community. The cost $30 per person and a
20% educator discount is available.
