As supporters and interested citizens gathered in the main corridors of the Grove Arcade, Mayor Terry Bellamy announced her intent to run for a second terms as Mayor of the City of Asheville.

As this announcement came on the evening of June 9, 2009, Mayor Bellamy opened her evening’s event by reading the comments of a local Asheville youth, which said, in part, “I hate where I live. There is shooting everywhere. When we (children) get scared, we run under our beds.”

Asked Mayor Bellamy, “And you asked me why I ran for Mayor in 2005? I ran because of this child’s fear of violence in their neighborhood.”

Bellamy continued, “Even if you call Asheville home for six months out of the year, or you live in Asheville as a year-round resident, I’m working to make our community better for all citizens.” Mayor Bellamy cited her continued commitment to move the City of Asheville forward by continued support for public safety in our communities and neighborhoods, teachers and educating our youth, affordable housing, living wage employment opportunities, and for “green” sustainability programs. These were only a few of the commitments the mayor considers on-going concerns for the citizens of Asheville.
Official filing for Mayor and City Council seats will begin on July 6.
