The Martin Luther King Association of Asheville and Buncombe County sponsors events throughout the community to honor Dr. King. The 2010 events are:

Thursday, January 14
•    4:00 p.m. – Youth Celebration held in Lipinsky Auditorium on the campus of UNC Asheville. The Youth Celebration is cosponsored by the University with support from Asheville High School, area businesses, and individuals. Free and open to the public. For more information, call (828) 281-1624.

Saturday, January 16
•    8:30 a.m. – The 29th annual Prayer Breakfast, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr., at the Grove Park Inn Grand Ballroom
Tickets for the Prayer Breakfast cost $20 for adults and $15 for youth. To order tickets by phone, call (828) 335-6896.
•    10:30 a.m. – Book signing by Mr. Pitts at the Grove Park Inn in the Hoover Room.
•    3:00 p.m. – Book signing by Mr. Pitts at Malaprop’s Bookstore and Café (55 Haywood Street).

Monday, January 18
•    Noon – Peace March and Rally from Nazareth First Baptist Church, at 46 Pine Street (corner of MLK Boulevard; gather beginning at 11:30 a.m.), to Martin Luther King Park. The Peace March and Rally are cosponsored by the City of Asheville and Buncombe County. Both events are open to the public.
•    6:00 p.m. – Candlelight Service honoring community organizations that work to fulfill Dr. King’s dream, at St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church at 1 Dundee Street, off S. Charlotte Street
